This handcrafted sculpture named ‘Ohene’, meaning sweet mother in Twi (from the Ashanti tribe) is made from local sese wood and beautifully displays the strong figure of a mother holding her baby, reflecting the beauty of family and the strength of a woman. Interestingly the Ashanti people are a matrilineal society where the line of descent is traced through the female. Historically this mother progeny relationship determines land rights, inheritance of property, office, titles etc. So the intricacy and workmanship that has been put into this sculpture truly emulates the weight the title ‘sweet mother’ carries in this culture.
