This handcrafted sculpture is made from ebony wood and is of a Kpanlogo Dummer. Kpanlogo is a traditional Ghanaian dance form associated with the Ga tribe, who were originally located in the Greater Accra Region, which is in the South of Ghana. It began in the early 1960s as an innovative dance form, influenced by American rock and roll, and giving younger Ga generations a point of distinction from their elders. The music accompanying the kpanlogo dance is drawn from older Ga drumming traditions such a gome, oge and kolomashie. Kpanlago is a form of dance that is now used all over Ghana, but is often used to welcome visitors. The drumhead is typically made from goat, antelope or cow skin that is stretched over one end of the drum and tightened through the use of six wooden pegs onto the drum. Kpanlogo is usually played with a stick, bare hands or a combination of the two.
