The festival starts in the month of August with the planting of crops before rainy seasons begins. Followed by a celebration through the streets full of beating drums, marching, singing and dancing to traditional songs. Homowo literally means “hooting at and ridiculing hunger”. It came about as an annual way of commemorating the day their ancestors overcame hunger after a long spell of famine in their land.
